Taking Steps Forward

 The videos below show me doing things that I’ve waited 12 years to do. The feeling was so surreal and felt like a dream. It was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that I was actually doing it. We had no idea that this setup would have these kind of results. I’m still not moving my left leg 100% independently, but it is a huge gain from someone having to move it for me.

Cat Saves Kid From Dog Attack

First off, I’ve never seen or knew a dog would stalk someone like that. I mean he literally followed and tracked that kid down without being provoked at all. But the awesome part of this video is that heroic cat! That was so cool that she protected the kid like it was one of her own. It shows she really does care. Way to go felines.

Turning Our Can’ts into Cans

Try not to let the length of this video deter you from watching it. This 5-foot-5 guy, Brandon Todd, is a great example of what can happen when you combine determination, dedication and dreams together. The strategy he used can be applied to many things, not just athletics. He wanted to accomplish something, so he did everything in his power, plus some to do so.

Lee Jeffries Black and White Photography

I luckily stumbled upon this amazing Lee Jeffries photo pictured above. I have always thought there was something supremely beautiful and classic about black and white photography. So, as a huge fan of this format I was instantly drawn to this image.

Lee Jeffries photographic journey began with a chance meeting with a young homeless girl in the streets of London. In 2008, the photographer was in London to run a marathon, and a day before the race he decided to wander the city to take pictures. This is when he aimed and focused his lens on a young, homeless woman.  His actions were not warmly welcomed by the girl and she began shouting at him. But instead of just taking off, Jeffries chose to apologize for his perceived intrusion. The 18 year old then proceeded to share her story with him. After this encounter Jeffries about the homeless completely changes.

Going forward he didn’t want to exploit these people or steal photographs of them. He also made sure he got to know his subjects prior to or while shooting them. Jeffries says, “I need to see some kind of emotion in my subjects. I specifically look at people’s eyes—when I see it, I recognize it and feel it—and I repeat the process over and over again.” He tried to keep the contact as informal as possible by rarely taking notes, and prefers to take pictures while he is talking with his subjects to capture the “real emotion” in them.

Self-taught and self-funded, Jeffries has used vacation time to travel to Skid Row in Los Angeles three times, as well as Las Vegas, New York, London, Paris and Rome, to continue his project. He uses his photography to draw attention to and raise funds for the homeless, posting the images to Flickr and entering the work into competitions. The proceeds from Jeffries’s Blurb book, which features homeless portraits, go to the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles and the photographer allows any charity to use his images free of charge.

Hang In There

I see this more and more as time passes. I can now look back at times of utter despair and hopelessness in my life and realize that those times directed me to where I was  meant to be at this moment. So when you are being knocked around, whether it be in your professional life, relationships or you just don’t feel like you are the person you want to be, Hang In There. Where you are today is not a direct reflection of where you could be tomorrow. Relocation of yourself may take weeks, months or years, so hang in there during the shaking and rearranging of your world.

An Artistic Friend, Alanna Vanacore

These works below belong to 25 year old Alanna Vanacore, a friend of mine from my hometown Ormond Beach, Florida. I first discovered her talented pieces through her Facebook and Instagram page. She recently relocated to Brooklyn, New York to pursue her artistic dreams further. Her love of art began as a child due largely in part to her mother being a painter also. She says she used acrylics at the early age of 6. Today Alanna mainly uses graphite and charcoal for her drawings, and oils and acrylics for her paintings. Some her favorite artists include: Jenny Saville, John Currin, Egon Schiele, and Lucian Freud.

This Billboard Creates Drinkable Water From Existing Humidity!

This is awesome! I love seeing technology being used for something as wonderful and useful as this. The billboard shown in this video is real and is Located in Lima, Peru. It literally creates water out of thin air by using a filtration system to convert humidity into 100s of gallons of life sustaining water.

Lisa Esherick and Her Casino-Themed Paintings

Most casino art present today are in the form of photographs, and more often than not, these works of art portray only the aesthetics and architecture featured in casinos. Rarely do we find one that focuses on the existing dynamic inside these establishments. But one artist is bound to change all that.

To this day, thousands of painters have lived but only a few influenced the art scene. Picasso’s unusual representation of subjects in three-dimensional form brought cubism and inspired a generation of abstract art. Georges-Pierre Seurat’s pointillism technique is now regarded as among the most influential impressionist techniques among artists. But more than technique and style, art too is a tool of expression. In a male dominated casino industry, one woman took a gamble and found her lucky break in painting subjects found in casinos—Lisa Esherick.

Esherick may not be of the same stature as Seurat and Picasso, but she holds respectable status among her peers from the art community. So what makes her casino art special? For the Berkeley artist, the expressive nature of art is the difference maker.

“In working with the figure itself, I want to create a range of possibilities for expressive interaction that speaks of the human condition in our contemporary world. Painting is my way of articulating intangible feelings about ways of relating to the world,” says Esherick’s profile in Art Slant.

The artist has already experimented with several other topics other than gambling. She has painted a diverse set of scenarios ranging from day-to-day traffic to beach landscapes. However, it was the gambling industry that put her in the spotlight.

“Gambling didn’t grab a hold of her, but gambling art occupied the next seven years of her life, taking her to Las Vegas and then overseas to Germany and Russia, where she spent considerable time at the roulette tables,” says a report by Inside Bay Area.

Casinos are always open for business, and with the dynamic nature of casino games, it was no surprise that Escherick took fancy of the place. Unfortunately, land-based casinos are competing with the rise of online portals. Casinos and art enjoy a mutual relationship as both try to embrace art and casinos as one. This is because the developers of casino games have begun to see how important visuals are to the success of their games, and they’ve begun employing a variety of art styles in their offerings. From the unmistakably adorable cartoon art of the Pigs Party and Happy Mushroom games on Bubble Bonus Bingo to the realistic renditions of “Grease” and “Titanic”, slot developers are quick to rely on different styles of art to draw crowds in.Meanwhile, Esherick’s art motivates artists to portray casinos in a different light. As we find a decreasing number of casino patrons, Esherick and several other artists attempt to immortalize casinos on canvas.

It Hurts You More Than You Know

It’s taken me sometime to understand this principle, let alone practice it. I hope you take the time to read this because I believe you too will be empowered by it.

There are times when I find myself just plan dang miserably angry at a person, a situation or just life in general. Then I pause and ask myself am I really changing anything by being this way? I’m serious, think about it for a second. As you sit there just full of anger and sourness, whatever it is you are mad at feels none of that and may be right as rain. You literally are drinking poison and thinking the other person or situation will be effected by it. Your emotions have no direct impact on either, so on top of the anger you are feeling….you are adding this toxic element also.

I’ll give you a personal example that just happened to me last night. I was angry at the way a girl had been treating me, so I was stewing over it sleeplessly in my bed. Once I became aware of what I was doing I asked myself is my current state even effecting the person I’m angry at or am I just reaping it’s horrible effects And that’s when I decided not to let them nor anger, hurt or control me. So either let your anger be known or just let it go all together because it is a poison that is hurting and effecting you more than you know, GET IT OUT….LET IT GO. I try to live by another motto also, “If you can’t control it, don’t let it control you”.

Arrows Waiting To Fly

I saw this last night and had to share it. This is such an empowering way to look at the trails and pain that we go through. Having this train of thought allows us to tap into one of the most powerful sources of strength that we have access to…HOPE. Hope in my opinion is one of the most important tools that we have to turn our dreams and aspirations into reality. Our dreams are the seed and hope is the water. I know what hope has allowed me to accomplish to this point, and I plan on fueling my tank with it’s bottomless reservoir till the end. So next time you feel the weight of your struggles pulling at you, stay hopeful that it will soon release you and send you flying towards greatness.

The Bondage of Expectations

This definitely doesn’t mean ACT without regard to possible dangers and repercussions. I believe it’s telling us to ACT in such a way that we are not looking for something in return or expecting a predetermined result from our actions. We set ourselves up for disappointment if we do otherwise.

Take our relationships and interactions with people for example. In some instances if you really examine where some of our problems start we’ll see that it starts with us and our unspoken EXPECTATIONS. For instance, let’s say you do something for someone, whatever it may be, and they don’t react or reciprocate in the way you expected, you now feel hurt, disappointed, shorted or angry. This is all happening while the recipient has no idea of your preconceived EXPECTATIONS that you had pertaining to this event or for them.

However, if we choose to ACT WITHOUT EXPECTATION in respects to our kinds acts for one another and truly do it unselfishly, we will never be disappointed because we did it without expecting any certain result from it. Whatever happens, happens. I’m going to try to make a concerted effort live my life free from the bondage of expectations. Come what may, whether it be something or nothing. The definition of surprise just so happens to be a completely unexpected occurrence. I guess we’ll be living a life full of surprises then 🙂

Humans That Look Like Paintings

My previous art oriented posts were mainly centered around artists and their ability to make their art look realistic, also known as photo-realism. Alexa Meade,  however does the contrary. She seeks to make three-dimensional subjects look like two-dimensional oil paintings when viewed in a photograph.

In August 2008, the artist began to apply acrylic paint to the surfaces of people, objects, and walls in a broad brushstroke that mimics the appearance of brushwork in a painting. After 9 months of practice, she was able to unveil her “Reverse Trompe L’Oeil” collection in October, 2009. Her aim is to make her living models into flat pictures. The result is walking, talking optical illusions that confuse how the eye processes these objects in space.

The artist never attended art school nor has she ever taken advanced painting courses.

Yup, I’m I’m sharing a food post with you. These grilled cheese rolls were too tasty and too easy to make not to share, and made in 4 simple steps. We also made our own tomato soup to go along with, but today I’m just going to share with you how to make these dipping friendly cheese delights.

How to make the grilled cheese rolls:

1. Flatten white bread or bread of choice (crust optional)
2. Put cheese of your choice on top and then roll the bread
3. Heat some butter on medium heat in skillet
4. Place roll seem side down and cook to your liking

Done! Then it’s just cheesy bliss from here.

Finally after years of unappreciative takers I have found someone that epitomizes this quote. For a time there I thought my expectations were too high or unattainable because I always felt short ended. I was merely searching for someone who would reciprocate what I was dishing out. That’s not too much to ask right?? Like the whole golden rule deal, treat others as you would like to be treated. As I trudged my way through relationships full of compromise, arguments and tension I thought to myself this can’t be the way it has to be. Then I would would try to rationalize these sorry excuses for relationships to myself by saying, “no one is perfect, these sorts of things come with relationships”. This is not true people! There are over 7 billion humans on this planet, there must be at least one out there that you can seamlessly interact and communicate with all while respecting and appreciating each other in the utmost.

So don’t sell yourself short. Don’t enter a relationship where you have lowered your own bar of expectations. Don’t settle for less than what you deserve.

Tokyo, Japan-based mother Aya Sakai has been photographically chronicling the adventures of her young son, Little Tasuku and his best friend Muu, a French Bulldog using Instagram. The boys’ mother, can’t seem to get enough of photographing the dynamic duo in their daily misadventures, and it seems their  290,000+ Instagram followers can’t seem to get enough of them either.Whether they’re cuddling on the couch, playing or watching tv, the two just can’t seem to get enough of each other.

Like most of us did when we were bored in class, Jody Steel chose to doodle. However, instead of using her notebook she decided to use her leg as the canvas and create some mouth dropping leg art.

Despite having no kind of formal training as an illustrator, Jodi’s dermal masterpieces look like the work of a seasoned artist and are sometimes mistaken as tattoos. And where you and I may have gotten scolded or punished for doodling in class, Jody was actually offered a job when one of the professors caught a glimpse of her leg art. A professor at Emerson College, in Boston, asked her to draw the illustrations for a ‘steam punk’ book called Steaming into a Victorian Future: A Steampunk Anthology.

Her pieces mainly utilize pens and black ink. Steel says she didn’t expect the fame she’s starting to receive on the Internet, “I really started because honestly, I didn’t have any paper around,” she told HuffPost Weird News. “I was drawing a lot in class, and people began to notice … I’m just really pale and my skin is most equivalent to paper.”

I’m guilty

I try to step back and remember the days when our communication was predominantly done by phone (talking) or face to face. Compared to texting, liking, tweeting and browsing. But I haven’t quite determined if how we communicate today is all that bad. Because of these mediums I have come to chat and know a number of you, and without the internet it would not be possible. I’m thinking that it’s all about balance. Although, I do believe it would be healthier if your face to face communication outweighed your internet communication.

There is almost no other way I could get updates on dozens of my friends in a matter of minutes like I can on Facebook. It’s like a daily newspaper that includes stories, obituaries, photos, events and comics all created by my friends and family. Or take the blog feed here where I get to be a part of each one of your shares.

Since, my injury and having my driving privileges taken away I have had to lean on the internet to feed my desire of communication more times than not. I know it’s not the best thing, but sometimes it’s the only thing.

So, yes I’m Guilty of clicking, liking, and internet relationships, but is it really all that bad? Are we creating a touch-less emotionally sparse means of communication? Or are we reaching people and their minds and hearts that otherwise would not be possible? I know I’m enriched by a lot of what you all post, share and write.

What is The Super Supercapacitor?

The Super Supercapacitor was one of 20 finalists in GE’s Focus Forward Films, a project that profiled 30 innovative ideas and the people behind them in three-minute films.

This short film looks at technology that could also us to charge our phone, tablet, or laptop in 30 seconds and have it work all day long. Ric Kaner and his team accidentally made this discovery while working on a new way to generate graphene, a material used in carbon nanotubes. This stumbled upon breakthrough in power storage holds the promise to change the world.

We ideally would like our rechargeable electronic devices to be capable of high energy storage and fast charging, the best of both worlds. That is what the super supercapacitor can deliver. Additionally, it is made with Graphene, a carbon polymer that does not contain toxic metals like batteries we use today. They are environment friendly and are not only biodegradable, but also compostable.

This work is most certainly in the research phase, with many groups chasing the almost unlimited power that the super supercapacitors has the ability to offer. Whomever solves this problem will have the entire world as its customers due to its real world application.

Technology like this would allow electronic devices like cell phones and tablet computers to be charged in seconds and hold a charge longer than standard batteries.

Eventually the technology can be scaled up and directly effect electric cars or storage devices for wind turbines and solar collectors. It currently takes hours to charge an electric car. The super supercapacitor would allow its users to “refuel” them as quickly as one can a gasoline powered car.

What’s Stopping You Today??…Bethany Hamilton Sighting

This past Saturday me and my dad went to the Oceanside Pier in California to eat at a restaurant called Ruby’s that sits at the end of the pier. Upon arriving we found it extra difficult to find a parking spot and had no idea why. Once we found a spot and reached the pier I learned that it the Ford Supergirl Pro surf contest was going on and that was the reason for the increase of people. So we watched a little of the contest and then proceeded to the end of the pier to have a late lunch at Ruby’s, which was delicious.

As we made our way back up the pier I noticed it was a bit more crowded and figured it was because it was just later in the day. I managed to find an open spot to look out and watch the surfing. While watching I noticed one of the surfers didn’t have an arm, and then it clicked who I was getting to watch. It was Bethany Hamilton from the movie Soul Surfer. It was amazing to say the least to watch her. I used to to surf before my injury and let me tell you, it’s no easy task paddling out and this girl is doing it with one arm. She not only was able to surf, but she was awesome and powerful once she was up. I couldn’t help but get choked up knowing what she has fought through to be doing what she was doing.

These Are Not Photos!

Here’s my 2nd installment of amazing hand drawn pieces of art that could easily pass as photographs. At first sight they may look like some pretty sharp blue photographs, however all those pictures are actually hand drawn with a simple Bic ballpoint pen! Spanish artist Juan Francisco Casas uses up to four 14p ballpoint pens to create some incredible photorealistic drawings. His source of inspiration comes from his own photographs of nights out with his friends, and after viewing a number of his drawings you can only imagine how wild his parties are. I’m only posting his PG-13 rated images here, but let’s just say his female friends aren’t scared to bare all. Juan is considered one of the more influential young painters in Spain.

Food For Thought From Jim Carrey

 

The other day I was thinking to myself I wonder if some of these celebrities that many of us assume are so happy and have so much are truly fulfilled. Plus many of them weren’t born into wealth or fame, so this gives them a priceless perception concerning the subject. Then a few days later I just so happened to stumble upon this quote by total coincidence. Upon reading it my mind instantly began processing the possible beautiful and conflicting truth in it. He adds so much credibility to it because I had read where Jim Carrey was struggling or breaking even like many of us are, earlier in his own life. So this bit of information gave his quote even more legitimacy in my opinion.

I later came across numerous comments discussing these quoted words that examined from many points of view. Here are some of the ones I found most interesting:

• Jim Carrey grew up dirt poor. he lived in a van with his family. i think he would know if having money really is the answer
  
• Honestly, I’d rather have money and not knowing the answer than being broke and not knowing the answer.
• Sorry, but I’m struggling to get myself fed every day, so don’t mind me, I’m just going to stand in the corner and envy you, Jim.
• They say that money cannot buy one happiness, but nothing can cause depression and suicide like poverty.
• Cool. But money could buy me endless travel, which I believe would be more fulfilling than endless desk time.
• Still would rather have the problems that come with having money than the problems that come with not having money.
• True happiness does come from within. *nod*
• It’s funny how Jim Carrey only mentioned having an excess of what is needed to live yet everyone gets all anal pained over how poverty is hell. The quote doesn’t even say that money doesn’t buy happiness, it specifically mentions only being rich and famous.

Awesome Technology- The 3D Printed Cast

Finally after dealing with clunky, itchy and smelly casts for years there is finally another option on the medical horizon. The 3D printed cast provides a very precise and equally beneficial support system that is fully ventilated, super light, shower friendly, hygienic, recyclable and stylish.

The 3D printed cast is created after the patient’s bones have been x-rayed and the outside of the limb has been 3D scanned. Once this has been completed computer software would then determine the optimum shape for stabilizing the injury with denser support focused around the fracture itself and generate a 3D model of the exoskeletal cast before it is created.

The pieces would be printed on-site and clip into place with fastenings that can’t be undone until the healing process is complete, when they would be taken off with tools at the hospital as normal. Unlike current casts, the materials could then be recycled.

 

Currently, the 3D printed cast cast takes around three hours to create. Today’s plaster casts only take three to nine minutes, but requires 24-72 hours to be fully set. However, with hopeful improvements concerning the 3D printed cast, there should be a big reduction in the time it’s production.

The project was done in collaboration with a University’s orthopedic department and looking for funding while it’s in the concept stage. You can check out the creator’s website, Jake Evill, HERE.

How To Be Average

Now let me be the first to tell you that I am guilty of many of these things, so I am by no means tooting my horn here.  This living average thing definitely hit close to home with me. There are many things that I keep telling myself will happen in my life or future, but guess what…our future is created in the present. With that said, I am actively fighting the “average” scenario depicted in this picture and not allowing my dreams to remain dreams. This  image can also be tied into my last post about “What Is Normal?”. I mean a lot this image fits right into what we see in movies, the media and how we’ve been brought up to expect life to be. And I’m not saying the so called “average” life that this cartoon depicts is a bad thing either. A lot of people have followed this very timeline and are great people and were more than happy doing it. The world needs dedicated hard workers in all social classes. However, I do think this illustration should cause us to step back and examine the path we are on and ask ourselves are we living life we want to be.

What Is Normal?

The other day I started thinking about What Is Normal? Yeah, I know I’ve been on this earth long enough that I should have already thought about this, ha. I mainly thought of this because I tend to put a lot of pressure and stress on myself in thinking I should be doing this or that by this point in my life. But why do we do that? Why do we think we should fit a certain mold or follow a certain track? In my opinion it’s society and/or what we see in the media. I don’t know of any book or absolute rule in existence that tells us what weight we should be, who we should love, when we should marry, how much money we should make, when to have children…This list could go on and I’m sure you could think of some yourself.

Like the image above says, normal is purely subjective. I had a thought the other day that looked further into this concept:

What kind of Asian are you?

This video not only because not only is it super funny, but it also very true…at least for me it is. This fantastically funny video What kind of Asian are you? looks at the ignorance of assuming someone is foreign based on appearance. I never know the politically correct term when asking someone where they are from from??…Like do you say what’s your heritage? Where are your parents from? What’s your ethnicity?

And I completely love her reaction to the white American guy’s question by asking him where he was from from. Of course he goes straight to saying he’s from America, and she responds with oh so you are Native American? I have seen this video everywhere the past few days and I refrained from clicking on it the first 5 times I saw it posted somewhere. Well I  guess 6 sightings is my breaking point because here it is, ha. This video was posted less than a week ago on May 30, 2013 and has close to 2 million views at the moment. I’m sure it will get millions more and you’ll see it shared in other places too. But I’m placing it here so maybe you’ll fall victim to it like I did 🙂

‘Space Oddity’ Sang From Space-Chris Hadfield

During a 5 month stint on the International Space Station a Canadian astronaut named Chris Hadfield documented his time by posting  Twitter photographs and YouTube videos (Both of these grew immensely following his posts from space). And to celebrate his last day aboard the craft he released a rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” Once the video was uploaded to YouTube it was viewed more than a million times in the 18 hours.

The “Space Oddity” cover was something Hadfield had wanted to do and had began planning for before he left earth on December 19. Due to a healthy dose of international copyright issues, he needed to work with Bowie himself and his team, NASA and the Canadian Space Agency before his launch in December.

Some may ask why he would do this. Chris Hadfield hinted at some possible reasoning in a different farewell-to-space video: “Who’d have thought that five months away from the planet would make you feel closer to people?” he asked. “Not closer because I miss them — just closer because seeing this [experience] this way and being able to share it through all the media that we’ve used has allowed me to get a direct reflection back immediately from so many people. … It makes me feel like I’m actually with people more, that we’re having a conversation. That this experience is not individual, but it’s shared and it’s worldwide.”

I believe this also was an amazing way to put the space program back on the map. Especially, with the recent closing of the Space Shuttle Program.

Be Comfortable With You

I think we underestimate the power and need for us to be comfortable with ourselves. It not only benefits us, but it will also help us be better for those around us. This quote above explains it superbly.

I don’t know how many times I have found myself trying to concoct a relationship purely on the basis of loneliness and searching for happiness in someone else. I never realized that I was actually trying to make them an escape from myself. The less selfish and more solid foundation for a relationship would be one built on us already loving and being comfortable with ourselves first. This would allow us to give and not just take. I have always heard we must give in order to receive.

Now don’t get me wrong, this isn’t taking away the job that we all have in being a support system to those we care for or that need us. What I’m saying here and/or warning against is the act of us basing our happiness in others. Because a good portion of the time we will be left disappointed by the unmet expectations that we have put in those around us. Being dependent on others for happiness makes us much more vulnerable and likely to be hurt.

Instead, let’s all try to be healthy and strong first that way we can give love first and receive it back as by product of what we gave.
